Musing on Furry and the Media: News Media is not you Friend.

March has been the usual bad news month for furries. It started with The Dependent Magazine piece on Vancoufur answering the age old stereotypical over generalized question:

“1. They are a community who enjoy dressing up as, acting like, and celebrating anthropomorphized animals (read: animals with human characteristics).

2. It may also be a sex thing.”

Next came Adult Swim’s “Check it Out” where the much misinformed main host came out with, again usual stereotypical “anatomically incorrect fursuit” . Finally we have a from New Zealand comes “Fur fetishists 'just nature lovers '” a fine example of press bias I have seen sine the Bush 2004 elections and miss-coverage of the tea party.

What one need to know the articles I listed above are just a sampling what is out there and should be an example what wrong with the media. There are a few areas of observation I would like to make, first how the media reports the story and furries weakness in dealing with the media and what can we do.

A lot what I have to say come from my own experiences as somebody who is an orthodox Christian, Pro Life, former Fundamentalist now reformed Christian and political volunteer. I see similar methods the reporter employs when reporting on furries to many political groups and causes I supported. It was my study media bias in reporting of furries that eventually drawn me into the fandom.

Convention Plan Update

I just got the news my contract at Intel has been extended until the end of this year. Yes Rainfurrest will be on my schedule in fact I will make my room reservations tonight. I thought I was going to but ran into a snag, I no longer have a credit card and need to set up a separate pre paid card with my bank.

The real question now is January 2012, I am leaning staying local and going to Rustycon a Science Fiction convention in Seattle. Rustycon is more of a fan based and I want to make up for poor experiences with Orycon 2011. There will be a few furry panels but FC is in the cards. But if I am extended to May 2013 Anthrocon will be in the cards that if I do not get a job at Intel. They are building a new developmental manufacturing plant in Oregon. There’s other fact for 2013, I plan to ask for a debt settlement with the debt collectors and considering moving to a new state.

My plans for Rainfurrest are I will be pushing for a Christian Furs Panel, Rainfurrest is big enough. I may try a Hello Kitty explaining the history of Sanrio and share item from my collection.

In a surprising press release Shintaro Tsuji standing aside with Janet Hsu, Sanrio first Female COO for it US. subsidiary announces the tapping Lauren Faust to Reboot Hello Kitty and Friends currently shopped to Viacom. Miss Faust, known for her work on Power Puff Girls, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends and My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic, will serve as Chief Executive for the New Adventurers of Hello Kitty and Friends.

Some in the animation world are surprised by the news yet information leaked Sanrio’s corporate office hint the reason is the wildly success of My Little Pony especially among its most unlikely demographic: 15 to 30 year old men who are fans of My Little Pony. One executives speaking on condition he remains anonymous, say Sanrio has been studying Hasbro and it response to the male demographic. We covet the untapped men’s market and feel Sanrio can do a far superior job of reaching males with Hello Kitty than the Ponies. If indications show a building a similar male fan base, Sanrio is better in a position to respond. Could plushies become Thief Magnet

Today at the church parking my truck was broken into for the second time in three months. Both time I had one of my giant plushies in my truck. I wonder if my plushies are inviting targets to car prowlers. The first time around Christmas, they popped the driver side lock; the thieves did not take anything, they were looking for Chistmas presents and saw my big plush. On Sunday, while my truck was parked at the church. The prowlers smashed the driver’s side window and stole my stereo and my giant hello kitty and other hello kitty plushies.
Unfortunately this means I going have stop taking my giant plushies on ride along unless I have to keep them on my presence all the time. I am going to miss my giant Hell Kitty Plush. Sadly this is the world we live in too many idiots spoiling my fun.
The big lesson is you all might want to think about what plushies one keeps in your vehicle and take other precautions. Less ones auto becomes inviting target to a car prowler.

Convention planning 2012

With the Colonoscopy completed and clear; nothing more than my paranoia at fault. It time to plan and announce my 2012 schedule and throw a request of you all.
This year I will have to keep it local, my next convention will be Wonder Northwest , a multi genre geek convention in the vein of comic cons in March, I will also be attending Kumoicon or local anime convention and Orycon. I am a bit leery of Orycon, if programming is anything like last year, as far I am concern the Old guard can keep their convention. I will just take my business elsewhere or we can start a real fan based science fiction convention. I will problem do a one day pass for Gear Con a steam punk con in September.
Not the wild card is if I can get my contract extended to the end of the year. I could possibly add in Rainfurrest. If I go I would like do a Christian Furry panel and perhaps if I feel comfortable I throw in a Hello Kitty panel to As for panels I plan to do Otaku over 25 a panel for older anime fans and I will also try to furry in anime panel at Kumoricon.
Now here were you can help If you have any ideas or suggestions of furry related anime please do leave a comment. Right now The are to goals; introduce furry to the anime fandom, meet and greet for furries at Kumorricn. I have talked to a few fellow furs there is an interest in the panel.

1st Portland Fursuit Romp 4 Feb 2012

Today was a perfect day for a Fursuit walk, not a cloud in the sky even though it was cold and windy. The day started around 12:pm meeting Saki The Cat , a fur I first met the Kumoricon boards. She was the only one who showed up, I was hopping more furs would show giving the chance to throw around some ideas for a a Furry in Anime Panel. With the cat in tow we went to the meet up place for the Fursuit outing. I did not have a fur suit but still needed the exercise. Part of the fun was watching the expressions of others as we walked the streets of Portland.
